Good Price even less than direct from DELL5
That is same DELL product, and you pay less the Direct from DELL. The shipment is on time.

    Shortcomings of DELL XPS 13303
This laptop appears to be very popular these days, but I found some drawbacks.
The speakers provide very, very low volume. Plan on buying external speakers if you want to hear music or watch movies. The power cord does not plug in the rear, like other DELL laptops, but on the side, making it less convenient to use on a desk, if you are using the AC adapter.
Compared to other similar sized laptops from other makers, it costs about $100 than similar laptops.
Had I known all this in advance, I would have purchased another laptop, instead.

    • 22-inch XBRITE-HiColor LCD
    • 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor
    • 320 GB hard drive
    • 3 GB RAM (4 GB maximum)
    • Dual-layer DVD±R drive
    • Quad-mode Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n)
    • Intel GMA X3100 graphics
    • Windows Vista Business (SP1)
    • Wireless keyboard and mouse

This All-in One's 22-inch LCD features Sony's XBRITE-HiColor panel technology for brighter imagery and more vibrant colors. It has a built-in DVD burner and Sony’s Click to DVD software so you can create a digital entertainment library for personal viewing at your convenience. Video conferencing has never been easier, thanks to the integrated 1.3-megapixel Motion Eye webcam.

Under the hood, it's powered by the 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, which offers a super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus speed and extra-large 3 MB L2 cache. Part of Intel's 45-nanometer (nm) Penryn series, this processor boosts speed and reduces power requirements. This Sony PC is Energy Star 4.0 certified, and has received a Silver EPEAT designation for meeting standards to help reduce its environmental impact. Additionally, it is RoHS-compliant, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances.

It also features a 320 GB hard drive, 3 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), Gigabit Ethernet and quad-mode Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) networking, Memory Stick and SD card slots, both PCMCIA and ExpressCard expansion, Intel GMA X3100 graphics with up to 358 MB of available memory, and pre-installed Windows Vista Business (SP1) operating system.

    The Basics

  • Processor: Experience improved energy efficiency with the 45nm Penryn series Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, which has a 2.10 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy and provides excellent high-definition video rendering via Intel's HD Boost.

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

  • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
  • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
  • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
  • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The extra large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 1 x 2 GB, 2 x 1 GB) helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this PC's video card. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. This notebook has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 6x for both DVD±R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD±R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: The included wireless keyboard and mouse have a matching aluminum style. It also comes with a full-featured remote control for controlling both PC and TV functions.

    Screen, Video & Audio
The 22-inch LCD panel has an amazing 1680 x 1050-pixel resolution. And thanks to Sony's XBRITE-HiColor panel technology, the flat-panel screen will deliver dazzling colors and sharp images whether displaying a DVD movie, television show, or web content. It delivers deep blacks and bright whites, true-to-life color, and razor-sharp detail. And with a glare filter and anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection, you’ll experience a beautifully clear image.

Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 358 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

It also includes an integrated Intel High Definition Audio card, stereo speakers (3 watts apiece for 6 watts of total power) and an internal 5-watt subwoofer.

    Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You also get super-fast wired connectivity, with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000).

It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (in addition to a PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options:

  • 5 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • Video input: 1 S-Video, 1 RF
  • Video output: none
  • Audio input: 1 line-in, 1 microphone
  • Audio output: 1 optical digital audio, 1 headphone
  • 1 ExpressCard/34 slot
  • 1 PCMCIA slot (Type I/II with CardBus support)

    The little laptop that roared4
This little laptop is perfect. It weighs only two pounds, looks good and has all the functionality you need for email, skyping, taking notes and checking on the net wherever a wireless connection is available. Battery life is about 3 hours. The webcam is not the best quality so you need to be in bright light for it to work properly. All said and done, this is a great little basic laptop for under $300.

    Total Solid State Excellence5
    What it does well:
    * Powers up from sleep immediately, runs XP SP3, Adobe Photoshop 7.0, Microsoft Office 93, Adobe PDF Pro, easily, and the little Atom processor has hyperthreading - it can run about three major apps with antivirus in the background at once without a significant performance hit - runs streaming video well. Haven't tried conferencing with this, though.

    * Eats very little power - if you set the power options appropriately, this unit can run up to 3.5 hours without affecting performance - once again, the Atom processor generates little heat, eats little power - the SSD drive doesn't make a sound - the smaller screen I would think uses less power than the larger screens - puts itself into sleep or hibernation quickly according to the parameters you set.

    * Extremely bright LCD - this unit has a screen brighter than my Nokia 810 and is visible even in direct sunlight. The brightness gradations are the widest of any mobile device I've used.

    * Tolerates abuse - like the Nokia internet tablets, you don't have to worry about bumps and thumps damaging the hard disc drive because there isn't one - and because the unit weighs very little and isn't big, it doesn't "deflect" when you carry it like some of the larger notebooks will.

    * Convenient - because it doesn't weigh much, and isn't sensitive to vibration, doesn't generate much heat, and doesn't have that disconcerting disc drive "hum", you're liable to carry this thing around, read with it in bed holding it up above you, or standing it up on its side, or putting it in a baggie and reading it in the tub - its also easy to lose in the backpack because it doesn't have much inertia and is smaller than most textbooks.

    * Versatile - if you like to read Adobe PDFs, the form factor of the screen is such that you can tip the device on its side like a book, and flip the screen rotation, then use the mouse to turn pages (sorry, Kindle), and this works for some streaming video as well.

    * Other stuff - excellent wifi reception, convenient trackpad on/off switch just above the trackpad, two usb ports in okay locations, has two flash drive ports, keyboard is quite excellent, shape of the shell is minimalistic and attractive and easy to stow; download HP's Youcam for the webcam after you "fix" it (see below) -- makes the webcam fully functional; matches perfectly with the Nano V550 mouse using SetPoint.

    Drawbacks:
    * The webcam has this "dark film" over it - google how to remove it if you're inclined - improves brightness by 100% - could use a kickstand - sound card is okay but not great - screen could tilt back an extra 15 degrees - or - doesn't have a touchscreen or tablet-screen flip option (okay, I'm dreaming now).

But for 300 bucks, I think I'll buy another one for someone else in my family because they keep using mine. This device has supplanted my Nokia.

Nice but not Quite Nice Enough3
I purchased the hp 1010nr as a Valentines gift for the misses. Staples had a price mistake and was selling the unit for $225!!! I couldn't resist giving the misses the ol' Fred Flintstone bowling ball gift so I bit. :-D

    Things I like

The 2 biggest reasons to get the HP mini is its small size and great keyboard. HP makes the best keyboard on any netbook. It includes a full size right shift key. You'd be surprised how much of a difference one key will make for your typing experience. The size of the mini is great too. I don't know how they get all of that functionality into such a small device. My internet router is bigger than this thing.

Things holding it back from greatness

The only thing I hate about this thing is the lack of battery life. We get only a couple hours of use with wifi on. HP is suppose to release an extended battery for the unit but it has yet to be seen. Also, the ext. battery will likely add a large lump to the back of the device. This would seem to take away from one of its biggest assets, its size. It also sucks that it doesn't come with Bluetooth or N wireless or 1 GB of memory but I wouldn't mind paying extra for those. The lack of battery life is holding this device back.

I don't need these things but if you plan on using the webcam or VGA out port, know that the web cam is mostly useless (too dark) and the VGA port isn't standard. To my surprise, it doesn't have a network port. You can probably find a USB solution if you need wired networking, however. The smallish 8gb hard drive may pose a challenge to some.

    Bottom Line

If you want a super small internet and emailing machine with the best keyboard in its class, this is the unit to get. If you want better battery life, more hard drive, standard ports, and extras like Bluetooth or N wireless, look elsewhere. I end up getting the Asus 1000HE for myself:

No space on the C: partition2
I don't know who in Lenovo picked a 28Gig Partition for the C drive and 105Gig for the D:drive but this makes no sense. When the system arrived I had only 13 Gigs available on the C drive. After updates to Norton and Windows Security updates I only have 7 Gigs. I use some programs (programming tools) that will only install on the c drive. So Now I'm under 5 gigs and I've only owned the laptop a few days... So now I'm going to have to partition this laptop to put most of the space on the C drive and reinstall everything!!.. What an inconvience for a new system. Someone was over thinking this partition setup. Just leave it all on the C drive and call it a day

    GREAT PRODUCT AT THIS PRICE!!!!4
Still learning about its various functions but so far so good. The only problem is that the face recognition system works if you are in an area well lighted. Great for this price. This is my first IBM system.

htc and microsoft don't give a sh!# about the customer1
this is one of the worst combinations of hardware and software, unresponsive, unproductive (which is the opposite of what this as a mobile device should have been), the collective time waiting for this crap to respond to even simple commands is staggering, htc and microsoft do not give a damn about the hundreds of thousand of hours of wasted time lost waiting for this thing to respond, all they care is about themselves, not your lost time or money.

    Amazon.com Product Description
The luxuriously sleek, black Sony Vaio VGN-AR190G AR Digital Studio notebook PC is more than just a computing showpiece. It's a powerful, portable multimedia/entertainment PC that can nimbly handle the most advanced graphics for both video and immersive 3D games, watch and record high-definition TV programming, and communicate with pals all around with world via VoIP calling and video conferencing using the built-in microphone and camera. It has a stunning 17-inch display with an anti-reflective coating to keep everything in view even in bright sunlight.

The AR190G is one of the first Sony notebooks to include high-definition Blu-Ray DVD playback capability. Blu-ray Disc technology supports full 1080p HD capability as well as uncompressed audio options and up to 5.1 channels. The Blu-ray system is backwards-compatible with standard DVDs and CDs, enabling you to enjoy your digital library for years to come. It's also a multi-format disc burner, capable of writing DVD+/-R/RW discs as well as dual-layer discs. And with its built-in NTSC TV tuner, you can also use the VGN-AR190G view and record your favorite programs using the advanced entertainment features of the installed Windows XP Media Center operating system.

It's powered by Intel's new, groundbreaking processor--the powerful Core Duo T2500--which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance and a more efficient power consumption. The dual execution core T2500 has a 1.83 GHz processor speed and 2 MB L2 cache. Other hardware features include an extra-large 200 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), full tri-mode 802.11a/b/g wireless capability, multi-format, dual-layer DVD burner, NVidia GeForce Go 7600GT graphics card with 256 MB of video RAM, memory card reader, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and a wide selection of preloaded Sony multimedia software titles. It also comes with a copy of the high-definition Blu-Ray DVD of the award-winning House of Flying Daggers.

Despite an abundance of high-end hardware and technologies, the VAIO AR Digital Studio Notebook utilizes lightweight magnesium to reduce unit weight.

    The Basics

  • Hard Drive: You'll be able to store large libraries of digital audio, video, and photos on the 200 GB hard drive (5400 RPM)--one of the largest hard drive capacities you'll find currently in multimedia notebooks (May 2006). This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2500 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. It also features Intel's Digital Media Boost, which delivers enhanced performance on floating point-intensive applications such as CAD tools, 3D and 2D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming.

  • Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is an excellent start for power users, and it offers a very fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots that can handle up to 2 GB of RAM, enabling you to add more power to handle graphics-intensive 3D games, video editing, and multi-tasking across several RAM-hungry applications.
  • CD/DVD Drive: This Vaio notebook's DVD drive is capable of playing high-definition Blu-ray disc movies in stunning clarity and incredible 1080p HD resolution. The Blu-ray drive can also record video or data to a Blu-Ray disc--up to 25 to 50 GB of HD video. This notebook also comes with a bundled suite of applications that enables you to capture, edit and burn high-definition camcorder content to Blu-ray media while maintaining high-quality 1080 HD resolution. It's also backwards compatible with writing to standard DVD and CD formats, as well as dual-layer (DL) discs. It offers the following write speeds: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, 8x CD-R, and 8x CD-RW.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard (2.5mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad, as well as action buttons including wireless LAN on/off and play/pause/stop/fast-forward/rewind for playback of DVDs.

The VAIO AR Digital Studio Notebook features a stunning 17" widescreen display with Sony's original XBRITE Hi-Color LCD technology.

    Screen, Graphics and Sound
The stunning 17-inch WXGA+ (1440 x 900 pixels--ready for 1080i HDTV) widescreen LCD offers Sony's XBRITE display technology--delivering deep blacks and bright whites, true-to-life color, and razor-sharp detail. And with a glare filter and anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection, youÕll experience a beautifully clear image even when outside in the bright sun. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce Go 7600GT graphics card with an amazing 256 MB of dedicated video RAM. Nvidia's TurboCache feature increases the performance of this thin and light notebook PC without increasing its size or draining its battery. It's coupled with the PowerMizer 6.0 advanced power management technology, which significantly extends your notebook PC's battery life while minimizing the amount of heat it produces.

    Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The AR150G features an integrated PRO/Wireless 3915ABG wireless LAN that's compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). This notebook also features an HDMI audio/video output, which enables you to connect to an HDTV or A/V receiver with just a single cable--no more hassling with separate video and audio cables. HDMI offers a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital signal, for the outstanding high definition video and multi-channel digital audio.

With the Bluetooth wireless connectivity, you can synchronize and transfer files between the PC and peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard/54 card slot, which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connection options:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (one Type II/Type I card)
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 slot
  • 1 HDMI video port (for connecting to flat panel, high-definition monitors and televisions)
  • 1 VGA monitor out
  • 1 S-Video out

  • Stereo headphones/speakers/line-out
  • Microphone/line-in

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (Update Rollup 2) is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. The Update Rollup 2 upgrade offers support for the Windows Media Center Extender technology built into XBox 360 game consoles, which lets you access entertainment from your Media Center PC--whether itÕs live and recorded TV and movies, music, photos or Online Spotlight--on any TV in the house.

Great Notebook, Amazing Screen, Awesome Blu/DVD -R Drive...5
I am very impressed with this laptop. I have owned it for over 8 months now and have burned a few Blu Ray films, and they all played on the PS3 seamlessly.. The big, bright screen and the speed in which it is capable of operating different software together is great. I am also going to say that the software at first is restrictive, but once you have taken the time to remove some of the junk Sony has bundled with the laptop, it moves at a very awesome speed. I am glad I made this purchase.

    I love this computer!5
My parents bought me a Compaq Presario on my 18th birthday and a little after a year, while I was away at college, the motherboard was fried. It was a piece of crap from the beginning, but after dealing with that, I decided I needed the best computer that MY money could buy.
The electronic guys we have talked to said to buy either a Sony Vaio or an Apple, as they are the best made computers. Since I don't like Apples (not software friendly), I decided to buy a Sony! I couldn't have made a better choice! I absolutely adore it.
The only problem is that it is HUGE. As a college student, I really can't take it to my classes but thats not much of a problem since I don't want to take such a nice computer to class anyways. But I did have to look really hard for a laptop case, which Sony doesn't make!
All in all, I love the computer. Everything works well on it and I've had it for about 6 months now. It's great!

    Gorgeous computer, very fast, blu-ray5
The price tag says it all: this is one power machine, even when you don't consider the Blu-ray drive. The styling is nothing short of gorgeous -- it'll turn heads everywhere you go. (It's 500 times cooler than anything Apple has produced.) The machine itself is a speed demon, and the 17" screen is breath-taking for a laptop. I don't know why one other person was complaining about "no 1080p"; on a PC, you don't need 1080p because the screen always renders everything in progressive scan mode and the "lack" of resolution is addressed via a superb downscaling algorithm in the computer itself, so you get top-notch video image quality.

$3300 is a lot of dough to cough up for a computer, but if you want one that makes a powerful statement about your status or just want the best geekware, this is for you.

    Amazon.com Product Description
Easily mobile at just 6 pounds, the Toshiba Satellite A135-S2276 makes it easy to get your work done with a large, bright 15.4-inch screen. The XGA-resolution screen (1280 x 800) permits side-by-side viewing of documents for increased productivity, and is also great for watching DVD movies when you need a break. This affordable notebook PC is powered by Intel's 1.6 GHz Core Duo T2060 processor, which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance and efficient power consumption. It also offers an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), dual-layer/multi-format DVD drive that also burns CDs, integrated 54g wireless connectivity, and ATI Radeon XPress 200M video card with up to 128 MB of shared video RAM.

This laptop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic, which delivers a safer, more reliable, and more productive computing environment. It integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

    The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2060 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 1.60 GHz processor speed, fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 1 MB L2 cache.

It also features Intel's Digital Media Boost, which delivers enhanced performance on floating point-intensive applications such as CAD tools, 3-D and 2-D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming.

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) has become the average size for notebook PCs. It provides enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a bit low compared to other business notebooks, but it's a workable start and it offers a decently fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add up to 2 GB of RAM for worry-free handling graphics-intensive presentations and multiple open business productivity applications. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • DVD/CD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 4x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.

    Screen, Video & Audio
This notebook has a 15.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3-D graphics. It delivers up to 128 MB of dynamically allocated video RAM shared with the system RAM. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.

    Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This Toshiba Satellite has an integrated Atheros 802.11b/g wireless-LAN that enables you to easily connect at wireless hotspots wherever you roam. You get a decent offering of connectivity options (though no FireWire):

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    Operating System
Windows Vista Home Basic is the operating system for users with basic computing needs, such as surfing the Internet, corresponding with friends and family using e-mail, or performing basic document creation and editing tasks. Additionally, Windows Vista Home Basic integrates new search tools throughout the operating system to help you quickly find the precise file or program you need.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

    Dimensions & Weight
    This notebook measures 14.2 x 10.5 x 1.45 (WxDxH) and weighs 6 pounds.

    Power
It's powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has a battery life of up to 2.5 hours (depending on usage). It has a 4.5-hour full charging time.

    What's in the Box
This package contains the A135-S2276 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty.

    Good Buy4
I have had this computer for almost 2 years and have not had a major problem. After having it 4 months, however, I could not take the slowness anymore. So I decided to upgrade the Ram memory from 512 to 2G. It was so worth it. Anyone considering purchasing this product should definitely upgrade the memory. I purchased 2G of memory for about 40 dollars. You may be able to find it cheaper. And the installation of the memory was simple. You just have to unscrew the back and pop of the little memory door and insert the new memory into the computer. I would suggest this computer for anyone. It is very reliable.

Almost Perfect for Ubuntu Linux 8.044
IF you search google for "Toshiba Sucks" you will find my video about problems with Vista on this laptop. Toshiba does not offer anything out of Vista support (which was the reason for the video, the hardware is excellent even though) for this laptop, although you might be able to obtain XP drivers for it, I had some sort of periodic stall in feedback with the laptop in XP which meant there was some hardware that wasn't getting serviced properly.

I ended up switching to Ubuntu Linux, and I've had a much better experience. I watch video podcasts on the laptop, I've run a webserver on it, I've installed a SSH daemon to permit me to do web development on it from another machine because I find it hard to develop on the "TV" now.. In fact now I'm looking how to enable the second VGA port for a dual head display, if that is even possible. I download mp3's from Amazon, I've got Windows MAME running in Wine.. I download videos from my digital camera, play them back and convert to OGG format with Oggconvert and upload to youtube. I'd say about 40 of the videos I uploaded to my youtube account were directly uploaded from this laptop.

Things I don't like about the laptop:
    1. Built-in Wireless is not very strong, I ended up buying a Dynex PCMCIA card to augment the the signal to my router (about 100ft away, not typical).
    2. Keyboard is short, Tab key is the size of a normal key and the capslock is a bit bigger, so you have to be cognizant of where the pinky finger is hitting.
    3. Core Duo processor is a dual core, but it is not 64-bit as the Core 2 Duo and Pentium D's.. So if you have Vista, it's the sucky 32-bit cousin, not the rewritten 64-bit version of Vista.
    4. One PCMCIA slot, not two like a thinkpad would have.
    5. Touch pad a little hard to get used to from a velocity sensitive nub, I'm a thinkpad user too.
    6. Two button support on the pad, not third button.. If you use blender 3D, you will miss that third button.
    7. Power button is on the keyboard, which should probably be on sides, to avoid accidental hit.
    8. There is the 512MB pre-installed problem, if you are running Vista, but Ubuntu doesn't have any memory problems at 512MB.. My memory is currently at well 519MB utilization, but I'm running firefox and Miro and a apache web server, so.. Xubuntu and Puppy Linux can work in less than 128MB of space, and I believe this laptop will boot from a USB device, haven't tried it.
    9. Glossy Screen supposedly reduces glare, but you can see yourself when it is pitch-black.. Unless you are a narcissistic, this is not good feature, next time I'm getting a diffused matte screen.

    Things I like:
DVD-R, yes DVD-R it will burn DVD's, fairly easy to install Linux alternatives, Vista was not hard to deinstall. 4 USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and Wireless, Ubuntu recognizes both on startup, and gives me the option to either use the dynex and internal and shows the levels of connectivity for both wireless connections on a drop-down as well as choice of encryption level for connection.

Perfect dimension for watching 16:9 movies and HD content. Volume dial on the front of the laptop, makes it easy to adjust the volume. Ubuntu almost supports this dial, Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) supported the front dial, but did not distinguish the speakers, however Hardy will, if you have the headphones connected on startup, don't ask me why. Ubuntu shows the speaker/volume when adjusting the dial, center-screen. Don't know about hibernation since I leave the laptop always on.

Best to get a laptop cooler, because this runs very hot. And if you run Ubuntu, rip the Vista sticker off and replace with a Ubuntu foil stick on. I downgraded to Ubuntu because Vista was a memory and resource hog, and could not configure filezilla and other software I use to do PHP programming.

PS- I store videos from Miro like ABC, NBC and CBS video podcasts, as well as "Stupid Videos" on an external Seagate 0.5 Terrabyte, 80GB is not enough if you plan to watch video podcasts on this.

Do not ! I repeat do not buy this computer1
When i bought my laptop it was my first time getting one (changing from desktop) i was unaware thinking if i stayed with a name brand it'd be good, Wrong! I chose this model and i payed around $850 so i was pleased. For a month or 2. I have had nonstop Problems with the Motherboard burning out consistently and yes i have upgraded it more "Each" time i sent it back to Toshiba (there customer support totally lacking) to have the motherboard replaced. after the third time doing this. I was pressured to extend the warranty which i didn't do because i was already so tired of the machine by that point i couldn't see doing that to myself. After it's warranty expired i had to sent it in to a repair shop and have the motherboard replaced 3 more different times and i've only had this computer a year and 3 months. so skip it,skip it please skip it and whatever you do don't buy one with the name Toshiba on it

    The Basics

  • Processor: Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 45nm Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor featuring Intel Centrino 2 technology. This processor has a 2.26 GHz processor speed, super-sized 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a extra-large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Formerly codenamed Montevina, Intel Centrino 2 processor technology improves upon every facet of a laptop's main features, including performance and battery life via new processors and chipsets, faster draft 802.11n wireless, and new business-class manageability capabilities. The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet.

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and it can run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background.

  • Hard Drive: The extra large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

The G-Sensor Shock Protection feature makes your data even less vulnerable to loss or damage. When the built-in 3D acceleration sensor detects a risky movement like being dropped, the HDD-head will lock up to secure its position and protect the disc from scratching. An intelligent algorithm, unique to VAIO PCs, judges whether or not a movement is risky, activating disk drive protection only when your hardware is at risk.

  • Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC6400, 2 x 2 GB, 2 x 1 GB) maximizes the capacity of this notebook, and it also offers an ultra-fast 800 MHz speed.

It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD±R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This VAIO SR notebook features an innovative keyboard design with keys that are individually raised above a solid, one-piece piano-black bezel layer, providing a quieter keyboard and more durable panel. It has a standard 82-key keyboard (2mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad.

The VAIO SR notebook features an innovative keyboard design with keys that are individually raised above a solid, one-piece layer providing a quieter keyboard and more durable panel.
    Screen, Video & Audio
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 13.3-inch WXGA high-definition screen, with its 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. The XBRITE-ECO technology (with LED backlighting) delivers brilliant colors and stunning clarity with efficient power usage, and it features an anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection and ensure a beautifully clear image from any viewing angle.

Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, which uses shared video memory (up to 1750 MB allocated from the system memory). This graphics card is built with Intel Clear Video technology, which delivers clearer, more detailed images by eliminating many of the jagged edges and video artifacts seen when viewing interlaced content and features powerful color control to ensure videos are not too dark, overly bright, or washed out.

    Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 5100AGN Wi-Fi chip. With the Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones as well as enjoy wireless stereo music streaming (thanks to its embedded A2DP profile).

    Almost Perfect......4
The Sony SR250J is a good laptop. I bought it for my father but find that I am using it far more than he. The machine is reasonably fast and 4gb of ram really helps Vista move along. However I did not give it 4 stars because I feel sony should have included a recovery disc and not make the end user create one. It took 3 hours to create 2 recovery dvd's. Now I am not sure if it created it from the leaner install (removed all the unnecessary software) or from the recovery partition that sony does not mention it has. Turns out there is a recovery partition that can be accessed to reinstall the computer back to factory.

The other gripe I have with the laptop is that the screen collects finger prints and dust real easy. So have some screen wipes handy. Otherwise the laptop is great. I love it, however its not for me so i am going to have to buy myself one. Also if you plan to install Linux in dual boot, research it since this is an vista 64 bit install and i cant seem to get linux to boot up.

    This computer is the great5
This Laptop has impressed me in so many ways I highly recommed buying it if you want a light weight highly powerful and very mobile computer

    A tad frustrating!.....cost wise that is!!!!!4
I received this notebook yesterday. Frustratingly, the price has dropped about $35 in the intervening two days between ordering and recieving the machine. Bummer. Regardless, here are my initial observations.

I am upgrading from the Vaio PCG-TR3A, a lovely little notebook however struggling now with only 2GB's of RAM and, like it's owner, an ageing processor. I was however impressed with the TR3A's monitor which, with a pair of "cheater" reading glasses was clear and sharp, although a little small. My main reason for buying the TR3A was it's portability however, after analysis I realized I really don't travel as much as I would either like or can afford to, so it was time to upgrade.

I decided to stay with Sony as opposed to other PC's primarily for the monitor and research confirmed that Sony still appears to be ahead of the game in this department. I initially considered the new Vaio "Z" series, however I could not warrant paying the extra dollars based on my normal PC usuage and hence I decided on the Vaio SR series. My other major requirement/desire was for a "fingerprint" reader so that I could log on to Amazon that much more quickly to spend my hard earned "dosh".

As usual, my new purchase arrived smack on time, ie, next day delivery at a very reasonable cost based on my "Amazon Prime" membership (highly recommended if you are an Amazon Junkie as I am). Interestingly the neoprene cover I ordered with the PC was delayed, by UPS it appears, but it's not a big deal right now however, when one pays for a "next day" service, maybe one should expect it?????

The PC was well packaged by Amazon and Sony. Out of the box there were no apparent problems. I was struck by how compact and light the SR is even though it has a larger screen size than my TR. I have to also comment on the rubber studs that the machine sits on. I did read in my research that the studs are lacking in tactility (I think I just invented that word) and "pooh poohed" the comments I read. I have to report, however, that on our countertop surface, the SR reacts similar to the puck on a "table hockey" game. This is great if you want to share your recent web findings with your partner on the opposite side of the table, however you have to be aware of it and a little careful. I'll be honest, I was a little dismissive of this comment initially however it is really evident however liveable with.

This is my first machine and real experience with Windows Vista and so far I have no real complaints. Connecting with my WiFi network went smoothly and upgrading Vista also went well. The SR screen so far meets my expectations although I have not challenged the machine graphically.

I am hugely impressed with the speed of the machine, especially on the web. My TR3A was exceedingly slow, even with an "n" wifi adapter. I also immediately notice the SR runs a lot cooler than the TR although I have to report I do not "game" or any such activity.

So far I am a little dissaponted with the "Fingerprint reader". I registered my finger print however it takes constant re-try's to get a good reading when logging on! Now, this may be operator error and I need to work on my technique and consistency, however, I did think that it would be a little more "friendly" and I hope that this aspect improves as it was an important purchasing feature.

The keyboard is nicely spaced which helps as I am a touch typist.....hmmm,.....isn't everybody these days? I am noticing a few errors....missed keys that is......beyond my normal typo's.....but again that may be "operator error" and I need to give it time. I also note a frustrating errant cursor secondary to, I believe, a very sensitive touch pad. Again I think this will impove as I become more familiar with the machine.

In general, I am pleased with the Sony Vaio SR250J and I hope as I become more familiar with the machine I will become even more enamored with it, and it with me!!!! In today's economy, it may be worth waiting a week or two to purchase the machine if you are considering this computer, as, with luck, it will be half the price I paid for it, however, that being said, it is definitely great value compared to my TR3A as the SR is at least $600 cheaper and is a much more powerful and up to date machine.
